Find out which promise applies to the problem
A ceiling stain after a new roof goes on raises two questions: what failed, and who covers that failure? A manufacturing defect, an installation error and fresh storm damage can follow different claim paths. The cause needs attention before the warranty label settles anything.
The roofer may offer workmanship coverage, and the manufacturer may cover specified products or an eligible roof system. Some enhanced programs also include installation coverage. Ask for the actual terms so you can compare what is included in each proposal.

Compare the coverage, not just the years
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Who backs it? | The installer and manufacturer can have separate obligations. An enhanced program may involve both. |
| What failures qualify? | Product defects, installation errors and specified wind performance can have different terms and exclusions. |
| What costs are included? | Materials, labor, removal and disposal are not automatically covered to the same extent. |
| Does the benefit change over time? | A full-coverage period and later prorated coverage can produce different claim values. |
| What does this roof need to qualify? | The component package, installation and any required registration must meet that program’s terms. |
Wind coverage is a useful example of why the detail matters
It would be wrong to say that roof warranties never cover wind. GAF, for example, offers defined wind coverage for qualifying products and systems. The installation and product requirements matter, and that coverage is not a promise against every consequence of a storm. Its warranty resources explain the available programs.
An impact rating is a different thing again. It describes performance in a test; it doesn’t itself establish a warranty against hail damage or an insurance discount. Keep the rating, warranty and policy questions separate when choosing shingles.
Keep a roof file that is useful later
- The agreed work and paid invoice
Keep the contractor’s identity, installation date and the specified products together. Proof of purchase can matter even where registration is optional.
- The warranty documents
Save the actual manufacturer and workmanship terms, including exclusions and any enhanced program confirmation.
- Changes after installation
Record repairs and later roof penetrations, such as solar mounts. Ask how proposed work affects the existing coverage.
- Transfer instructions
If the property changes hands, check notice requirements promptly. Do not assume the previous owner’s coverage transfers automatically.
Roof warranty questions
Does every roof warranty need registration?
No. GAF’s basic Shingle & Accessory and Roofing System limited warranties do not require registration, while its enhanced programs do. Keep proof of purchase and follow the specific program. The manufacturer’s registration guidance explains the distinction.
What does limited lifetime mean?
It is a defined warranty term with conditions about the products, owner and property. It doesn’t mean every roof problem will be repaired free for as long as the house stands. Compare the non-prorated period, later benefits and exclusions in the document offered with the roof.
What if the installer closes?
A promise backed only by that business may become difficult to enforce. A manufacturer-backed installation program has a different backer, but its eligibility and claim terms still matter. Ask who would handle an installation claim under the specific proposal.
Will the warranty transfer if I sell?
It may, subject to the program’s owner, timing and notice rules. GAF’s transfer explanation illustrates why the buyer should check promptly after a sale.
Is storm damage a warranty claim or an insurance claim?
That depends on the failure and the coverage. A storm-related loss may belong under your property policy; a qualifying product or installation failure may belong under a warranty. The insurance guide explains the policy side. Report the problem under the relevant terms without assuming one route excludes every other possibility.
