Compare the look, tested performance and installed scope of the shingles you’re considering. A style name does not answer all three.

Start with the property and the roofing help you need.

Start with the appearance you want and the roof you have

From the ground, three-tab shingles tend to show a regular pattern of flat rectangles. Architectural shingles have a layered appearance, while designer profiles can suggest slate or shake. A closer inspection may be needed to identify an older or unfamiliar product.

You don’t need to climb onto the roof to choose a starting point. Our roofers can identify the existing covering and help compare products suited to the roof and your budget.

Three common shingle styles

These descriptions explain appearance and selection. Availability, weight, impact classification and warranty terms need to be checked on the exact product.

Three-tab shingles

A regular cut pattern gives these shingles a flatter, more uniform appearance. When repairing an existing roof, product availability and the ability to match the old material can matter.

Architectural shingles

Keep appearance, impact and coverage separate

An architectural or designer shingle can carry an impact rating. If an insurance discount matters, confirm the qualifying product and documentation with your carrier before ordering.

Look at samples against your own house

A small chip indoors can read differently from a full roof in daylight. Ask about larger samples and compare them with the brick, siding and trim. View them in more than one light condition before settling on a color.

  • Color blend

Notice the mix of tones rather than judging the dominant color alone.

  • The street view

Step back to consider how the roof will sit with the house and its surroundings.

  • Property requirements

Check any applicable HOA or design requirements before committing to an order.

  • Solar performance

If heat reflectivity is part of the decision, compare published product ratings. Some darker products use reflective technology.

GAF’s cool-roof overview shows why appearance alone does not establish solar reflectance.

Shingle selection questions

Do I need a Class 4 shingle in Arlington?

It is worth comparing for hail exposure, but the decision depends on the product, installed difference and any confirmed insurance benefit. A rating does not guarantee an undamaged roof after a storm.

Does a lifetime warranty mean I will never replace the roof?

No. Read the coverage, conditions and any changes over time. The warranty guide explains the distinction between coverage and expected service.

Why does one roof slope look more worn?

Exposure, shade, installation, repairs and other conditions can differ across a roof. Appearance alone does not identify the cause or establish when replacement is needed.

What is the price difference between architectural and impact-rated shingles?

Our roof calculator compares current published DFW planning bands on the same roof surface area. An actual proposal should also specify the system, access and repair assumptions.
